Coaching is above all teaching. The greatest coaches are the greatest teachers. A team is most likely to be successful in their execution if they are taught properly. There are no magic bullets; it’s all about breaking the game down to the individual techniques used in a specific situation and teaching the players those techniques until they are mastered. The following are some ideas to consider.

Anson Dorrance - German Combinations

This is part of a session conducted by Anson Dorrance at an International Coaching Seminar in February 2008. The session focuses on the German-type combinations and small-sided games that Dorrance uses with his National Championship UNC team. (Courtesy worldclass coaching).
1. Setup – players on the outside Find the play making center midfielder and the center back; play possession, if the white team of three win it 5 times they rotate out; The whole idea is that you look for the play maker in the middle – challenge for the playmaker is to change the point of attack – the players on the outside have a 2-touch restriction
ii. Coaching Points
1. Decision to play 1st or 2nd time
2. Players are a dime a dozen who play the ball square or back – Elite players go forwards
3. Find the tactical seams – middle player
Attacking in the Final Third: A Model Training Session

The objective of this training session is to teach a forward-back-through passing pattern to be used near the attacking third of the field. The pattern helps the attacking team build the attack by connecting the Defenders (forward pass)to the Strikers, the Strikers with the Midfielders (back pass) and the Midfielders to the Strikers (through pass) to penetrate well organized defenses.
After conducting a model training session, you the coach, must evaluate the success of the session. The success can be judged by asking yourself a question. Are the players performing the new skill or tactic in their large group scrimmages and games? If the answer is yes, effective training session. If the answer is no, conduct an other session using the same theme.
MODEL TRAINING SESSION (U13 AND ABOVE)
I. Warmup (10-15 Minutes)
Players in pairs with one ball per pair. Players ground pass
(balls rolling on ground) to each other.
Coaching Points
* Strike the top half of ball to make it roll (easier to receive).
* Receiving player in an open position (on toes) and controls ball
outside their footsteps (to
space).
* Gradually increase distance from 10 to 15 to 20 to 25 yds.
* As distance increases, encourage sound follow-through to improve
accuracy.
* For more advanced players, increase pace of passes (speed of play).
II. Stretch (5 Minutes)
III. Technical (15-20 Minutes)
Combine pairs into groups of four with one ball per group. Pairs should be approximately 20 yds. apart and each pair has a five yard diagonal stagger. Introduce the forward-back-through passing concept (keep it brief). Player positioning is as follows:

The passing sequence is as follows:
1. Long ground pass from A to D (forward).
2. D lays-off ball to C (back).
3. C gives square pass to D.
4. D gives long ground pass to A (through).
5. A and B repeat the forward-back-through sequence performed by C
and D.
6. C and D switch positions as do A and B after completing their
sequence.
Coaching Points
* Long pass must be a quality ground pass.
* Start with 2 touch for the receiving player. 1st touch is a
cleanup and the 2nd touch is the pass.
* Square pass must be to space in front of partner.
* Partner 1 touches the through ball that has been played square to
space.
* Diagonal players should use both sides of long target player.
* Encourage players to say (loud) forward-back-through. This helps
to achieve a rythm.
IV. Tactical - Small Group (20 Minutes)
5 (2-2-1) v 2 in large space with attacking shape and no keepers to small goal. Start with ball in back with Defenders. Shot on goal is allowed after forward-back-through sequence.
Coaching Points
* Encourage long passes from back to beat the Defenders.
* Switch field to get numbers-up.
* Look for Attackers to keep their shape.
* As excersise progresses, increase speed of passes and movement
off the ball (speed of play).
V. Tactical - Large Group (30 Minutes)
8 (3-3-2) v 4 plus keepers on 3/4 field to full size goals.
Coaching Points
* Long passes from back to strikers checking back for ball.
* Good movement off the ball after back pass.
* Pace of through balls.
* Defenders protect vital area and use lots of verbal communication.
* Encourage use of keepers as 2nd sweeper.
* Use freeze play for coaching opportunities.
* Break this session into 3 active parts with breaks in between.
Demand fast play (speed of thought and speed of play).

Kilimanjaro Stars lost 1-0 to a weaker Somalia
In a just ended match between the over-confidence Kilimanjaro Stars (Tanzania Mainland national team) and the under dogs Somalia, we have witnessed a suprise win of one goal to nil to Somalia.
Kilimanjaro stars and their fans took for granted and thought that their recent impressive performance of Sudan, was enough to scare away guys from Somalia. To their suprise Somalia took lead just thirteen minutes after the kick off in the first half.
The goal came as a results of Stars defenders mistakes, as they thought Somalia's players were off side. I always tell my players to make sure that they play with the Referee, they should not assume anything unless they here referee's whistle. As a player you can not decide that it an offside when a referee or his assistant has not granted any.
On their first match Somalia lost 2-0 to Zanzibar who are at this moment in a battle with the Host Uganda.
Stars now are second from the bottom with Goal difference advantage over Rwanda. They now in a very tough situation given the fact that they need to win against tough teams, Zanzibar has never been an easy team for Stars. Uganda are good plus the fact that they hosts, Rwanda although were defeated 4-0 on the hands of Uganda they are still a threat to a Maximo squad.
I just wish good luck to stars but they should remember that winning is one thing,but consistency on their performance is another crucial thing.
